Caribbean Startups

Kingston Beta, our bimonthly Event staged in Jamaica, connected to the Caribbean and Diaspora – is a platform for startups, entrepreneurs, developers, designers and tech professionals – to learn, be inspired and network.

It’s become the hub for the movers and shakers in the Jamaican and Caribbean Tech Community. Over 40 events have been held, that 2500 people attended and have seen over 70 Jamaican and Caribbean technology startups pitch their new businesses ideas.  We’ve kicked off a tech entrepreneurship movement in Jamaica and growing across the Caribbean.

In 2012, we will have 5 bi-monthly events and end the year with  Caribbean BETA- The annual Tech Entrepreneurship Conference. Our year long theme is “Startup Local, Think Global” . Each Kingston BETA event will have a guest speaker (local, regional and global), a BETA Pitch Contest and networking with the smartest minds in the industry.

The next one is Thursday February 23rd, 2012 at our home The Jamaica Pegasus Hotel.

Kingston BETA is part of a network of initiatives that includes  SiliconCaribe.com, Caribbean BETA, the annual tech conference coming in November, StartupWeekendJamaica, and  are all working on the same mission – to drive tech entrepreneurship in the Caribbean. We believe tech entrepreneurship can and will become a major driver of startup businesses, job creation and innovation.

Kingston BETA is part of a network of initiatives that includes  SiliconCaribe.com, Caribbean BETA, the annual tech conference coming in November, StartupWeekendJamaica, and  are all working on the same mission – to encourage tech entrepreneurship in the Caribbean. We believe tech entrepreneurship can and will become a major driver of startup businesses, job creation and innovation in Jamaica and across the Caribbean.

To that end we hold Kingston BETA, a bimonthly meet up for the Jamaican and Caribbean Tech industry to pitch their startup ideas, learn, be inspired and network with like minds. In its four years, it has hosted over 2500 attendees and 70 Caribbean Startups.  As the founder of ConnectiMass, the company that has these online media, events, education and soon funding initiatives as its mission, I’ve always believed that “we need startup entrepreneurs who are more successful, raising money, growing profitable businesses, creating jobs and having exits, and it can’t just be one person, it needs to be several people. We need more of their faces online, on tv and in newspapers to make students, other young professionals see that it is accessible and possible. We also have to widen the understanding and economic and wealth building reality, that ICT is not just telecom and telemarketing call centres.”

SiliconCaribe.com is looking for Caribbean Tech startups to cover. Will you tell them about yours?

I’m constantly looking to improve SiliconCaribe. In some of the feedback I’ve received continuously, is to step up the coverage of Caribbean and Caribbean-led Startups. I couldn’t agree more since it’s a passion of mine, at the core of the mission of Kingston BETA and Caribbean BETA, sister initiatives to SiliconCaribe.

Plus I’ve been very aware of the the constant surge in awareness of Kingston BETA and the fresh, curious faces who are attending wanting to know if their idea of using the Internet to do something spectacular can fly. Added to that there is an underground bubbling up of initiatives that I believe must be shared with the world as they are worthy and will inspire others to be bold and push forward with theirs.

So I’m going to make it happen, so for the rest of the year you will see us profiling lots of startups and technology initiatives worthy of the spotlight.

Startups death = Death from 1,000 cuts

by Marc Gayle

You hardly ever hear of a startup that just goes *poof* one day and suddenly implodes. The more common occurrence are a series of bad decisions by management and/or the founders. This also applies to larger companies too. One of the things I have encountered while building Comp Versions is that it is easy to become overwhelmed by the amount of work ahead of you. Especially when it is now common mantra to get something out as quickly as possible.

Even more especially when you have to be learning programming as you go along, are doing it by yourself and bootstrapping – talk about bad odds. Although I have completed a major milestone (the majority of the Rails back-end is done), I have now started the front-end. More

Screw uniques and pageviews; New metric: Revenue per month

by Marc Gayle

I hereby suggest that we, as the web development community, from herein going forward ban all references to uniques, pageviews and hits. The only metric that really matters to the creation of a viable web company is revenues – but more specifically profits. Not just revenues & profits, but revenues & profits per month. It’s not about making $1M in one month and nothing for the next 20 years (although, if that’s your MO, kudos to you). It’s about building a sustainable business that generates steady monthly revenues and profits. More
